Corvalol is a soothing and antispasmodic drug, the effect of which is determined by its constituent components.

Ethyl ester of α-bromizovaleric acid has a reflex calming and spasmolytic effect due to irritation of predominantly oral and nasopharyngeal receptors, a decrease in reflex excitability in the central parts of the nervous system, and an increase in inhibitory phenomena in neurons of the cortex and subcortical structures of the brain, as well as a decrease in the activity of the central vasomotor centers and a direct local spasmolytic effect on the smooth muscles of the vessels.

Phenobarbital suppresses the activating effects of the centers of the reticular formation of the middle and medulla oblongata on the cortex of the cerebral hemispheres, thereby reducing the fluxes of stimulating influences on the cerebral cortex and subcortical structures. Reducing the activating effects has, depending on the dose, a calming, tranquilizing or hypnotic effect. Corvalol reduces the stimulating effects on vasomotor centers, coronary and peripheral vessels, reducing overall blood pressure, removing and preventing spasms of blood vessels, especially cardiac vessels.

Mint oil contains a large amount of essential oils, including about 50% menthol and 4-9% menthol esters. They are able to irritate the "cold" receptors of the oral cavity and reflexively expand primarily the vessels of the heart and brain, removing spasms of smooth muscles, causing a calming and mild choleretic effect. Peppermint oil has an antiseptic and antispasmodic effect, it has the ability to eliminate the phenomena of flatulence.

When taking sublingually, suction begins already in the hyoid area, the bioavailability of the active substances is high (about 60-80%). The effect manifests itself quickly (after 5-10 minutes). When taken orally, the effect develops after 15-45 minutes and lasts for 3-6 hours. In people who used to take barbituric acid preparations, the duration of action is shortened by the accelerated metabolism of phenobarbital in the liver, where barbiturates cause induction of enzymes. In elderly people and in patients with cirrhosis of the liver, Corvalol's metabolism is reduced, so their half-life is prolonged, which requires a reduction in dose and lengthening of intervals between doses of the drug.

Indications for use

  • Neuroses with increased irritability;
  • insomnia;
  • in the complex therapy of hypertension and vegetovascular dystonia;
  • indistinctly expressed spasms of the coronary vessels, tachycardia;
  • spasms of the intestine due to neurovegetative disorders (as an antispasmodic drug).

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, bromine;
  • severe violations of the liver and / or kidney function;
  • hepatic porphyria;
  • severe heart failure.

Appropriate safety measures for use

You should avoid the simultaneous use of alcoholic beverages.

It is not recommended long-term use of the drug in connection with the possible formation of dependence on the drug.

Care should be taken to prescribe the drug with arterial hypotension.

Special caveats

Use during pregnancy or lactation. Do not use during pregnancy and during lactation.

The ability to influence the reaction rate when driving or working with other machinery.

The drug should not be taken by persons working with mechanisms, drivers of motor vehicles, etc.

Children.

The experience of application for the treatment of children is not.

Dosing and Administration

Corvalol is prescribed sublingually (under the tongue) or inside adults 1 tablet 2-3 times a day.

If necessary (severe tachycardia and spasm of the coronary vessels), a single dose can be increased to 3 tablets.

The duration of the drug is determined by the doctor depending on the clinical effect and the tolerability of the drug.

Overdose

Overdose is possible with frequent or prolonged use of the drug, which is due to the cumulation of its components. Long-term and constant use can cause dependence, withdrawal syndrome, psychomotor agitation. A sudden discontinuation of the drug may cause withdrawal symptoms.

Symptoms of overdose: central nervous system depression, confusion, dizziness, ataxia, drowsiness, down to deep sleep. In severe cases of poisoning - violation of breathing, tachycardia, arrhythmia, lowering blood pressure, collapse, coma.

Treatment is symptomatic.

Side effects

Corvalol, as a rule, well tolerated. In some cases, such side effects can occur:

from the digestive system: discomfort in the stomach and intestines, nausea;

from the nervous system: drowsiness, mild dizziness, decreased concentration of attention;

from the side of the immune system: allergic reactions;

from the cardiovascular system: slowing of the heart rate.

These phenomena are eliminated by reducing the dose.

With prolonged use, there may be a dependence on the preparation and the phenomena of bromism. Symptoms: depression of the central nervous system, depression, apathy, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, acne, hemorrhagic diathesis, impaired coordination, confusion.

Interaction with other drugs and other interactions

Preparations of the central oppressive type of action strengthen the action of Corvalol. The presence of phenobarbital in the formulation can induce liver enzymes, which makes it undesirable to use it simultaneously with drugs that are metabolized in the liver (with coumarin derivatives, griseofulvin, glucocorticoids, oral contraceptives), since their effectiveness will decrease as a result of a higher metabolic rate. Corvalol enhances the action of local anesthetic, analgesics and hypnotics, this is due to the content of barbituric acid derivatives.

With simultaneous application with valproic acid, its effect is enhanced.

With simultaneous use with methotrexate, the toxicity of the latter increases.

Alcohol enhances the effect of the drug, also increases its toxicity.
